World Obesity Day: October 11, 2019

On October 11th, we recognize World Obesity Day. The goal of World Obesity Day is to help support practical actions that will help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight. While obesity is a health condition it is also important to note that often obese individuals can experience stigma related to their weight and often receive negative portrayls in the media. As health care providers, nursing knows that addressing the root causes of obesity without perpetuating stigma will help people to achieve a health weight.

What do you love most about nursing?

Every day is a new challenge and you don’t know what you’re going to see on any given shift. I also love that you are truly there to help people who are in need. I also really have enjoyed working with the nursing team at the hospital where I was enrolled in a clinical setting. They wanted us to thrive and they were there to support us.

What is your biggest wish for Nursing in BC?

I hope to see more opportunity for young nurses in specialty areas. I also would like to see if BC can start to have Certified Nurse Anaesthetists.

Where do you see nursing in five years?

I see a lot more technology being integrated into nursing to help nurses with their patients, as well as more male nurses in the industry. I hope to see less violence towards nurses in all departments as well.

What was your best day in nursing?

My best day in nursing so far has been in the Emergency Department where I was able to work alongside one of my preceptors. I felt I had a real chance to see what really happens in the ED. I have always wanted to be an ER nurse, and this day really solidified that goal for me.

Because of nursing, I get to...

I get to see people that need help and I can touch their life in a very special way by helping to develop a plan. I will be forever grateful for the resources that we have in our hospitals to aid in my schooling.
